Safe and healthy uses of digital information and technology (February 8-14, 2016)

Couse Objectives:

1. Model and facilitate safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies (ISTE 5b)

Module Objectives: 

1. Read and reflect upon digital citizenship, cyberbulling, and healthy uses of digital technologies by writing a blog post on these topics.  
2. Evaluate an acceptable use policy by discussing a scenario surrounding its use.

1) Digital citizenship comprises a whole host of issues, some of which we will discuss this week, some we will discuss next week.   For some background in these issues, please read the following article and take notes.

 2) Cyberbullying has made the news frequently in recent years.  For some background on cyberbullying, please read through and take notes on this website created by the federal government.  There is information on defining, preventing and reporting cyberbullying.

3) Healthy uses of technology can include issues such as carpal tunnel and eye strain, but it can also include addiction to digital technologies.   Read (or listen) and take notes on the following story.

4) Write your reflective post on the readings this week.  Include a self-evaluation using the rubric from this course.

5) To protect students, teachers, and districts, school districts have anyone using the Internet at school sign an Acceptable Use Policy or an AUP.  For your activity this week, you will be selecting one of these five scenarios (you may choose any one you wish) and responding to it using student and/or teacher AUPs (these are AUPs from some Ohio districts, but you may use AUPs from your own district if you would like) and our readings from this week for support (where applicable).  Post to your blog a response email.  Visit one of your classmates' blogs and comment on his/her scenario with further evidence.
