Using digital-age communication and collaboration tools to interact locally with students, peers, parents and the larger community (March 14-20, 2016)
Objectives:
- Model and promote diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness by using digital-age communication and collaboration tools to interact locally and globally with students, peers, parents, and the larger community (ISTE 5c)
- Read and reflect upon readings surrounding using technology as a local communication and collaboration tool.
- Participate in a conversation utilizing a tool for online collaboration.
1) This week's readings will include ways in which teachers can use communication and collaboration tools to enhance interactions at the local level. Take notes as you read.
- Interacting with students- Tweeting the Night Away: Using Twitter to Enhance Social Presence
- Interacting with peers (pick one)- Grassroots Professional Development: How Teachers Use Twitter (more interesting information about using Twitter, including voices of teachers) or The Design of an Online Community of Practice for Beginning Teachers (a good read if you are a teacher who ever considered leaving the profession)
- Interacting with parents- What Parents Want in School Communication and browse this example of a 1st grade teacher's excellent website http://ohlsd.org/class/dam/
- Interacting with the larger community- Five Steps to Better School/Community Collaboration and browse this organization on Facebook Chicago Students Organizing to Save Our Schools
3) If you have a Twitter account, you're ahead of the game this week. If you do not, go to twitter.com and sign up and then follow me at https://twitter.com/LaurieAngelone. For our activity this week, we will be having a conversation on Twitter and you will also be looking for ways to use Twitter to interact with peers and your larger local community. Create your Twitter account and follow me by Wednesday night, March 16, at midnight and then email your username to me (I will then email a list of people in our class so that we can all follow each other). I will begin the conversation on Twitter and I ask that you offer up at least 5 different tweets this week (this can include responses to my tweet or tweeting to begin your own conversation). In addition, I want you to find at least 5 different educators to follow that have interests similar to yours (but these must be in addition to people in our class). I also want you to find at least one local community organization or business that you can follow. Make contact with either one of these (educators or community organization/business) even if it's just an introduction. To find people or organizations with similar interests, try using the search bar within Twitter. You can search for any name or phrase (art education, for example) or you can search by hashtag like #edchat or #edtech. You could also search through the people I follow (although please don't judge me for following some of the Real Housewives :)). Report back to me on Twitter with who you found to follow and who you communicated with (you only have 140 characters on Twitter, but you can tweet me multiple times or write on your blog and tweet me the link).
To clarify, this is what you need for the activity this week:
- Create a Twitter account, follow me and email me your username. Follow the rest of the class when I email you their usernames.
- Take part in a discussion that I will start on Twitter.
- Follow at least 5 different educators on Twitter. Find at least 1 community organization/business. Make contact with one of these educators or organizations. Tweet me with the people/organizations your followed and the response you got.
- You should have at least 5 tweets by the end of the week on your account.
- Check Twitter daily!
